  • Prom Advice: 10 Things To Know Before Going To Prom

As the old saying goes, hindsight is 20/20. No matter what the situation or event, it always seems like there's certain things you wish you knew before hand that may have resulted in you making different decisions. Well, prom is no exception to this rule. It's a big day with lots of planning, and one where you tend to have high expectations. While you always hope that prom day will go exactly how you envisioned it for months, that's usually now how the day actually goes down.

That's why we were happy to see that 20-year-old Olena of YouTube fame, known by her YouTube name IamJustaMakeupLover, listed out the 10 things that she wished she knew before attending her prom. She explained that she had planned her prom day out schedule by schedule, hour by hour, but things tended to veer off course a little. Watch the video below to see what she wished she knew before attending  prom.

Below a quick run-down of everything to know before going to prom, from Olena's video. Olena said she gave 10 tips, but we actually heard 11 great prom day tips from her!

Prom Day Tips from YouTuber IamJustaMakeupLover:

    1. Things will go wrong - go with the flow.
    2. Don't stress out over your date; if you're not in a serious relationship or don't have a BFF you're going with as a date, your date really only comes into play when it comes to the pictures. You'll be dancing the night away with your friends the rest of the time!
    3. It's okay to not have a group. You'll see your friends at prom, and don't worry about the pictures so much.
    4. Uncomfortable shoes are optional! You'll most likely be wearing a long dress where you won't even see your shoes, so choose ones that are comfortable for 5 hours of being on your feet and adjust your dress to those shoes.
    5. Make sure you do your hair in a way that's comfortable.
    6. Do a makeup test run. Even if you go to MAC or Sephora, you could end up with a look you're not comfortable with. When you do the test run, take pictures with your eyes closed, eyes opened, and to the side so that the look can be easily re-created by anyone.
    7. False eyelashes are a must! They look great in pictures. You're supposed to look fabulous at prom, after all! Also, remember to use waterproof mascara because there may be lots of crying!
    8. Don't trust your makeup artist on their artistic vision - know what you want and tell them! Olena recommends going with a natural, bridal inspired look, perhaps that's a little more dramatic and smokey.
    9. Have a backup place for your pictures - have an indoor, and outdoor, and another indoor. It may rain on your prom night, or schedules may end up being re-arranged.
    10. Don't feel like you need a stretch limo. A small limo or even a black car is fine (our tip: you could even have fun in a sports car, like a Mustang, if you or a friend own one!). It's just a ride! You may also want the ride to take you from prom to wherever you're going after-prom.
    11. Have fun, it's a celebration! Dance and have fun with your friends because you won't see them for much longer with school ending and going off to whatever comes next for you after high school.

One last tip from us: while it's of course important to simply go with the flow come prom day (just like Olena mentions), start thinking of your prom day as early as possible to try to prevent as many unwanted surprises as you can. Olena's tips will certainly help with this! Good luck on your special day!!

  • Prom Primping: Most Flattering Hairstyles for Different Necklines

Some of us spend just as long browsing online for the perfect prom hairstyle as we do shopping for dresses. It seems like the least of your concerns at first, but as the big day inches near, you realize you're totally clueless – especially if you're doing your hair yourself! Finding something that's elegant but easy can be really tricky, and on top of that, you want something that complements the neckline of the dress. That's why we've compiled a list of a few different hairstyles that you can definitely do yourself and that will also turn your dress into an ensemble.

    Halter Tops: Loose Braid

    roos1

Halter tops are tricky because you want to show off the pretty neckline, but they do show a lot of shoulder, which can cause some visual imbalance for those of us who are a bit broader across the top. Piling all your hair on top of your head can leave your shoulder area looking a little bare, while wearing it all down will cover up that pretty neckline. We think Blake Lively makes a good compromise by doing a loose fishtail braid thrown over her shoulder. You can wear it up high like hers, or you can start it down at the nape of your neck for a more beachy look. It helps that this style is super easy!

    Spaghetti Straps: Tousled Chignon

    roos2

When your dress has delicate elements on top, such as spaghetti straps, you want to play off of it with a delicate hairstyle. A tousled side-chignon, like the one Jessica Alba is wearing, is the perfect way to create a look that's feminine and romantic. Some subtle jewelry, like long earrings and a small bracelet, can really bring it all together. Click here for an easy chignon tutorial!

    One-Shoulder: Ballerina Bun

    roos3

Nobody opts for a dramatic, one-shoulder neckline with the intention of covering it up! Asymmetrical necklines are a show-stopper, so let them do all the talking by keeping your hair up and away. There's nothing more chic than a sleek ballerina bun with this neckline – it's such an elegant and classic hairstyle for a dress that has an edge. Go for natural eye makeup, a shimmery highlight, and a bold lip if you really want to make a statement with your style.

    Strapless/Sweetheart: Loose Side Waves

    roos4

Strapless dresses are well-loved as prom styles, and admittedly, they leave a lot of room to play around with hairstyles. That being said, there's nothing we love more than letting some loose waves fall over one shoulder when wearing a strapless dress. It reads slightly retro and extremely glam – just look how amazing Amy Adams looks in this look!  Here's an easy tutorial so you can do it yourself.

    High Neck: Chic Ponytail

    roos5

High necklines are all the rage this year – everyone from Kate Blanchett to Adriana Lima is wearing them. In our opinion, they look sleek and maybe a little bit mysterious when paired with a clean, simple ponytail. Just look at Allison Williams – she pulls off this look perfectly a bold red lip!

Bella Thorne is known for shakin' it up on the Disney Channel TV show "Shake It Up," but she's also known for something else...her gorgeous red hair, of course! Maintaining a vibrant hair color seems like a hard task, but HollywoodLife.com revealed that it doesn't have to be difficult at all. They said that using L’Oréal Professionnel Inoa Color Care makes maintaining that vibrant look a cinch. Available at salons like Warren-Tricomi in New York City, this line of products includes the Protective Cream Shampoo, which contains an excess amount of nutrients in order to prolong the intensity and shine of color-treated hair. The line also contains the Protective Cream Conditioner, which provides hair with a barrier on the surface to keep color looking vibrant. HollywoodLife.com also added in, "It also provents harmful aggressors from fading the color!" The Protective Maque is the final product in this hair care line, which hydrates dry hair while protecting the color, leaving hair silky and shiny.

  • Styling your Hair with your Flat Iron

We all know that we would be lost without our hair straightener right? But, most of us don’t even know all of the cool things you can actually do with your hair straightener if you have the right one.  Us being the Roo Girls that we are, we've done extensive research on cute hairstyles, and having a good hair straightener is definitely part of that!

    Buying a Hair Straightener

    zebra chi

Looking for that perfect straightener for yourself? You can definitely find a lot of information on the internet about which ones to purchase! If you've done your own research on hair straighteners already, you've probably found what we've found, which is that most websites we've searched say that the number one hair straightener is the "Sedu" or "GHD." My personal favorite, as well as the favorite of some others of the Rissy Roo's staff, is the “Chi,” though. They're a little pricey (just like any good straightener), typically selling anywhere from $70.00 to $150.00, but totally worth every penny. They are rated with good quality and I personally have never had a problem with them. Plus, if you can get a super chic one like the zebra CHI above, can you really go wrong?? Whether the Sedu, GHD, or Chi, you'll find yourself with a good, dependable, long-lasting straightener.

Ideas to Try with your Straightener

Looking for some style tips to try out with your straightener? Below are some ideas for you!

Did you know that you can crimp your hair with a flat iron? Wait until you try it, it looks so fabulous! Here’s a how-to from Cosmopolitan Magazine:

“To create a cool crimp like Jennifer Hudson’s, starting with straight locks, grab a one-inch section of hair and position your flat iron at the root. Begin twisting your wrist back and forth, slowly, as you glide the iron all the way down to your ends. Repeat until all strands have been tended to.”

You can also make those sexy girl waves, which is also pretty easy to do with your flat iron. Here’s how Cosmopolitan says to get the look:

"Score sexy, undone curls, like Kate Hudson’s by starting with the flat iron near your scalp. Wrap a one-inch section around the flat iron plates as you simultaneously turn the flat iron away from your head (similar to how you would curl a ribbon with a scissor). Continue pulling the iron down the section of hair until you reach the ends. Repeat until your entire head is curled and voilà!"

Most importantly for us girls who when their hair is dry from the shower it gets wavy and frizzy (like me), a flat iron can be your best friend! When straightening your hair, all you have to do is simply run small strands of your hair through the iron and your hair turns out nice and straight, shiny flat and sexy!

  • How to Find Your Prom Hairstyle

Prom Dress? Check! Shoes? Check! Purse? Check! Your prom outfit isn't quite finished yet, though! Your prom hairstyle is the icing on the cake to finish your perfect prom look, so if you haven't started thinking about what to do with your lovely locks yet, it's time to do so!

Braids are a popular trend this year, and Bella Thorne rocks the look so well!

When it comes to deciding how to do your hair, there are four rules that will lead you down the right path to the perfect look:

    1. Just as we started this post, make sure you choose your dress first. Your hair style should complement your dress, not compete with it! If you have a busy dress, picking a simple hairstyle may be the way to go. Or, if you choose a certain style of dress, you want to make sure that your hair follows that style.
    2. Keep your personality in mind. Your number one priority at prom should be making sure you feel comfortable, and that includes everything from feeling confident in the dress you choose to the hairstyle and make-up you wear. If you're a more casual girl that isn't the biggest fashionista, then going with a more simple hairstyle may be right for you. If you love dressing up from head to toe every day, find the perfect formal up-do to rock all night!
    3. Don't fight your natural hair texture; work with it. If you're going to a hair salon to get your hair done, ask your stylist what would look best with your hair type. If you'll be doing your own hair, there's plenty of sites on the internet with recommendations for what to try for various hair types.
    4. Remember that it's the Information Age; with how the internet is becoming increasingly more social, your prom photos are bound to be around for years to come. Choose a hairstyle that's timeless and won't be embarrassing 30 years from now!
