  • Beginner Friendly Hacks For Applying Eyeshadow Perfectly

If you love rocking makeup, getting that perfect eye makeup look is super important, whether you're going shopping or having a night out on the town. But, if you're not a makeup connoisseur, applying eyeshadow perfectly can be tricky. So, to make it a little easier, we've compiled a few eyeshadow applying guides that we're obsessing over.

The first comes from Good Housekeeping Magazine. They recently created a Complete Guide to Where to Put Your Eye Makeup, which includes a detailed photo of where eyeshadow should be placed in various areas around your eye, and instructions for each section. The main areas they break down are:

    • Browbone/highlight: Add a matte or shimmery pale eyeshadow here to make your eyes pop.
    • Lid: This is typically where your main shade goes.
    • Crease: Applying a darker eyeshadow here adds dimension.
    • Outer V: The outermost corner of your eye where deeper shades are usually applied.
    • Upper Lashline: Where your eyelashes begin on your upper lid. You can define your eye in various ways here.
    • Waterline: The inner rim of the eye, usually where either darker eyeliner is applied for a smokey look or pale nude eyeliner is applied to make the eyes look wider.
    • Lower Lashline: Just below the waterline, where liner and shadow is also applied to define the eyes.
    • Tear Duct: The inner corner of your eye, where usually pale or shimmery shadow is added to open up the eye.

  • First Date Makeup Mistakes According To Men

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, it's time to not only start looking for your perfect V-Day dress, but to begin thinking of the rest of your outfit, too, from accessories to makeup. Valentine's Day can be difficult to plan outfits for, as it's a day where you really want to look your best. It can be an especially sensitive day in deciding what to wear if you're single looking to go out with your BFFs for a single night out, or if you're in a new relationship where you're still feeling things out.

While it can be tempting to go all-out with a sexy outfit and lots of makeup, POPSUGAR surveyed a group of men about first-date makeup "don'ts" for the big day, and their responses were surprising! POPSUGAR explained, "We spend so much time looking at celebrities and trying to emulate their looks, from intense contouring to overdrawing our lips. It's lovely to admire other women and try new things with our hair and makeup looks, but don't take their aesthetic to heart." Watch what the men have to say in the video below and you'll see why!

Pretty surprising, right? In a totally good way, of course! The three takeaways when it comes to getting that perfect more natural Valentine's Day first date makeup look that POPSUGAR discussed in the video are:

    • Avoid bold lipstick. All those shades gals usually love turn out to not be such big hits for guys! But, don't be afraid to be yourself, either - if you feel the most comfortable in bold lipstick, that's okay, too.
    • Use a light hand with your foundation. The men in the video explained that they are fans of the more natural look, so going too heavy on foundation can go against this.
    • Don't go overboard on eye makeup. So, you may want to tone down that smokey eye makeup look that's become so popular over the years.

However you decide to dress and do your makeup for Valentine's Day, just remember to choose the look you're most comfortable in, as the most important thing is to be comfortable and confident. The rest will fall into place!

  • 5 Tips to Make Your Lipstick Last in the Fall & Winter!

A new season means new lipstick colors! This fall, the lipstick shade we are obsessing over is plum. According to Cosmopolitan, plum lipstick is the number one sexiest piece of fall make-up.

1490-shay-mitchell-s-funky-fall-look-0x375-2"Spiked with a dash of burgundy and a hit of black, plum lipstick becomes, 'sophisticated in a twisted kind of way,'" says makeup artist Tom Pecheux.

Date-Makeup-Idea-Dark-Plum-Lips-0-megan-foxWe couldn't agree more with Tom! We are definitely taking advantage of the fall weather and squeezing in all the different shades of plum lipstick that we can get our hands on! But, with winter right around the corner, don't worry because this is a shade that can be worn right through the cold weather, too.

The only thing we can't help but hate is when our lipstick wares off! Having to re-apply lipstick many times throughout the day is exhausting and wastes the product; which is why we want to share 5 tips to make your lipstick last, an article based off of Seventeen Magazine. With winter officially just around the corner and chapped lips on their way, these tips couldn't be more important.

a-lips-getty-creative1. Exfoliate. Scrub your lips with the rest of your face while you're in the shower in the morning. A gentle exfoliator will smooth over the flakes that come with winter's chapped lips.

    2. Moisturize. With the temperatures dropping faster than you can say "pumpkin spice latté," moisturizing everything, including your lips is key. Stock up on a long-lasting chapstick to keep your pucker from getting chapped and use it before applying lipstick to help it go on smoothly.

    3. Prime & Line. Use an easy-to-apply lip primer to set the stage for the bold color. Once it's absorbed, outline you lips in a liner that's the same shade of your natural lip color.

    4. Add Your Color. Apply the lipstick of choice in two swipes.  Blot a couple times on a tissue and repeat with another swipe of lipstick, followed by another blot. Do this until you score your desired color strength.

    5. Set with Powder. You heard us, powder—on your lips. A light, translucent powder will help keep the color in place even after you enjoy a huge mug of hot chocolate!

Once you follow these short steps, you will be ready to rock your plum lipstick (or any other color lipstick) all day long!

  • Get Ready for your Winter and Holiday Formals with A Roo Girl!

The most exciting part of having an upcoming event is picking out the perfect outfit, which goes far beyond just the dress. You also have to make sure you have the perfect hairstyle, make up, and shoes to truly complete your outfit! Because of all these important aspects of putting an outfit together, sometimes it can turn into a lengthy process, especially if you have no idea where to start! So, we're going to show you how we get ready for our special events in four easy steps! Read on for easy steps to get ready for a winter inspired dance or formal event.

Step 1: Pick which dress length you would feel most comfortable in. Since you're going to a formal event, you'll be walking, sitting and probably dancing. Therefore, you want to choose a dress that doesn't keep you from the fun! And, of course, one that you love!

    Blush style 9800We chose Blush 9800, a floor-length, powder blue/nude mermaid gown!

Step 2: Now that you've picked your perfect dress, it's time to move onto shoes. We tend to go with heels for most formal events, but if you're not comfortable wearing heels you could always go with a dressy pair of flats, especially if you plan on wearing a long gown that will hide the shoes anyway! Listed below are Sizzle by Coloriffics Andes and Touch Ups Dale - two shoes that we'd love to wear with Blush 9800!

If you want to go with fancy flats, Sweetie's Anne Ballet Flat is a great choice! They are the perfect shoe to sweeten up any social occasion dress, and with them coming in 3 different colors: Black, Nude, and Silver, there's definitely one to match your dress. Continue reading

  • Fall 2012 Makeup Trends

Even though December is here, it's still pretty warm out on the East Coast and Winter doesn't officially set in until the end of the month. So, we're making sure to enjoy all parts of Fall before all of the leaves are gone!

We've been especially keeping our love of Fall going by breaking out our favorite makeup looks of the season here at the store! Allure Magazine is always a great place to get beauty inspiration, and we've taken a hint from them for our favorite Fall makeup looks. They picked their top Fall makeup trends earlier this season, and we chose our favorite 4 out of the bunch that we've been rocking here at Rissy Roo's!

Red lipstick is always "in," but lately the popular look is to take that classic red color and go a shade deeper. You can rock the look by just wearing a dark red shade, or be bold with a burgundy or plum color. There's some shades that even border on being black! Kristen Stewart looked stunning wearing a dark red lip color on the October 2012 issue of Vogue UK. It's a very romantic look, but just make sure to pair it with some blush or bronzer to keep from looking like Bella when she's a vampire in Breaking Dawn 2!

Smoky eyes have been a popular trend for a few years now, but this look has always been synonymous with black. Now it's time for black to take a back seat and let brown be the go-to color when rocking the trendy smoky eye look. Black smoky eyes originally became popular because of how bold they are; but, smoky eyes can still be impactful, even without the bold black. Go for softer shades like brown and taupe for a more natural take on the fashionable trend.

While the classic smoky eyes took a softer turn this season, the classic cat eye got a make-over with a more bold, statement look. You can be the coolest cat in town by adding in longer swoops and larger shapes to your outline for a more dramatic look.

Whether or not you'll be outside camping all through the Fall or hitting the ski slopes all Winter, having rosy cheeks that make you look like an outdoors maven is always sexy! We especially love Gwyneth Paltrow's healthy looking cheeks paired with deep red lipstick in the above photo - two trends in one!

What's your favorite makeup trend for the Fall/Winter months? Leave a comment below and let us know!
